FAQs
Is the Blacklock Skillet non-stick?
Yes, Blacklock pieces are triple seasoned, which gives them a naturally non-stick surface right out of the box. This finish only gets better the more you cook.
How is Blacklock different from standard Lodge cast iron?
Blacklock is at least 25% lighter, making it easier to lift, manoeuvre and serve with one hand. It’s also triple seasoned, giving it a smoother, more naturally non-stick surface from day one.
Why does the skillet darken or change colour over time?
That’s natural cast iron seasoning doing its job. Every meal adds layers of polymerised oil, making your skillet tougher, slicker and more personal to you.
Will the handles get hot?
Yes. All cast iron conducts heat, including handles. Always use a handle mitt or tea towel.
- Hand wash and dry immediately, even before first use.
- Rub with a light coat of vegetable oil after every wash.
- How much oil? Enough to restore the sheen, without being 'sticky.' Why? To keep the iron 'seasoned' and protected from moisture.
- It's okay to use a little soap when needed, just make sure you dry thoroughly and apply a little oil afterwards.
A Note on Pre-Seasoning & Natural Variations
Lodge cast iron arrives pre-seasoned with 100% vegetable oil, and because this is a natural, hand-applied seasoning (not a synthetic coating), every piece will look slightly different straight out of the box. You may notice small marks, tonal variations, or areas where the seasoning appears lighter or darker. This is completely normal and simply reflects how the oil has settled and dried on the racks during the seasoning process.
As you cook, your pan will continue to build its own seasoning layer, becoming darker, smoother, and more naturally non-stick over time. These are signs that your cookware is bedding in beautifully and gaining character with every meal. With regular use and a light oiling after cleaning, your pan will only get better, stronger, and more uniquely yours.
What Makes Lodge Different?
For over 125 years, Lodge has been casting iron cookware in Tennessee using time-honoured methods and sustainable practices. Every piece is made in the USA, built to last generations, and designed to become the pan your grandchildren fight over. This is cookware with soul, the kind that earns its place on your stovetop and in your family's stories.
